What is an improver?
You’re improving, so well done you, but you move with uncertainty. There are areas in the arena of musicality that leave you feeling confused and sometimes, when you think you’ve nearly got it, you go to play something and it just sounds…off.
You’re good with open chords like C, Dm, Em, G, Am, E, A, D and E and your changes between these chords are good. You have played around with some scales and maybe even tried to make your own melodies with them.
You can strum but maybe don’t feel all that confident about it. You need a lift onto the next stage.
Elevator going up!
Quick overview of the course
You’ll be working alongside a group of players who have arrived at the same stage of learning as you and have identified that there is more fun to be had if we move our playing along as a team effort. This involves group jams, organising practice groups, sharing the experience and using positive peer pressure.
What you’ll learn
Scale work: Working with shapes one and two of the Pentatonic series to play riffs and licks.
Finger Picking: An introduction
Building Speed and dexterity: Speed based metronome hand workouts.
Improvising and creating harmony, the rudiments.
How a typical session runs
We open with a simple two song jam to blow away the cobwebs, raise the roof, place the woes of the day in the bin of rock and roll abandon.
We then spend 30 minutes discussing the practice material from the previous week which you’ll have been doing diligently (of course) and set up the practice for the week ahead.
The remainder of the session is spent applying the material we have picked up by jamming through our repertoire.
We have a library of songs that work well in group jams that we can lean upon in the early stages, but, as time passes the songs we play are likely going to be chosen by you and your class mates.
How do the Social events work
The Guitar Social is the biggest network of ‘offline’ guitar players in the UK. This means that in the real world, away from the computer screen, we have more players of every level linked, networked and sharing the incredible experience of being a musician together than anybody else. We know this because when we started in 2013, there were no other organisations such as ours. We invented it. So with confidence you can attend any of events and be sure to meet an interesting character who will tell you about an album they love or a passionate strummer who will wan to talk about a guitar purchase they’re about to make or a semi shy beginner hiding a serious vocal talent and gigantic stadium filling ambitions. Your phone book will fill with new friends, people to go meet, people to go jam with. This is what we do best and this is what our events are for.
